Sloane’s House will be a paediatric respite and hospice care centre located in Whitby. With families and children in need currently having to travel to Toronto or Ottawa to receive care, the goal to build Sloane’s House is overseen by a Board of Directors and supported by numerous families, caregivers and community leaders. The centre, available for those living across Durham Region and in the surrounding underserved communities, will provide short-term specialized care for medically fragile children, offering engaging programing for the child, while parents and other caregivers take a much-needed break.
Sloane’s House will also be supported by palliative care specialists so that children who are on their end-of-life journey will receive specialized care in an environment where quality of life will be the focus for however many days remain. With over 1,900 medically fragile children in Durham Region, this centre will be a welcoming “home away from home” where children and their families, feel cared for by our experienced professionals, based on the family’s shared values, beliefs, needs, hopes and goals for the present and the future.
