FALL 2023 UPDATE

Welcome to the Fall — where clocks have fallen back, and the smell of warm apple spice fills the air. Over the past few months, Sloane's House has been focused on planning for the upcoming year and here we are sharing our latest news with you.

Strategic Planning

The Board of Directors met three times over the summer to review the current Strategic Plan and map out our next steps as we continue to work towards the vision of creating Sloane's House, a paediatric respite and hospice care centre in Durham Region. We are now meeting with the local councils in all eight municipalities and our provincial members of Parliament to update them on our progress and confirm their support.
2022-23 Annual Report
In early September, the Board also convened for its Annual General Meeting. As a registered charitable organization, we are committed in keeping the Corporation responsible and accountable.

We are happy to have published an Annual Report for the fiscal period of April 2022 - March 2023.

Serve In Your Community

The Board is actively looking for local community members who want to get involved. Opportunities are available to serve on one of several committees including Governance & Human Resources, Government Relations & Communications, Fundraising & Events, Program & Operations, and, Finance & Audit. Committees generally meet bi-monthly.

Sloane's Day Highlights

At the end of July, we hosted a one-day family event in partnership with Grandview Kids. Families with children who have high complex medical needs were invited to join us at WindReach Farm for a day to gather together, support one another, and enjoy the farm activities.
We want to thank our dedicated team, and the volunteers at WindReach for creating an enjoyable day for the moms, dads, and children (despite the rain). An extra special thank you to Douglas Mackenzie for bringing his guitar and entertaining us in the barn. We also want to acknowledge the support from 100 Men of Whitby for their generous donation.
November 28 is Giving Tuesday!
We are proud to be participating in a global day of giving! On this special day, we're asking for your help to support our vision in building Sloane's House.

Our mission is to enrich the lives of children with persistent high health needs, by providing a personalized family centred approach for Durham families who need a place for respite and hospice care. We believe that GivingTuesday is a great way to further that mission.

Clarington Adult Hospice
Congratulations to our friends at Durham Region Hospice who broke ground for the new Marigold adult hospice care facility in Clarington on October 13th.

We look forward to learning from you as we work towards creating a paediatric hospice care centre for children and youth.

Did You Know?
An estimated 1,900 children with medically complex needs live in Durham region and surrounding areas. If families need specialized respite and hospice care services they have to travel to Toronto or Ottawa. We want to bring services closer to home.

And, learn more about how we can support the siblings of children receiving hospice care.

About Us
Sloane’s House will be a paediatric respite and hospice care centre located in Whitby. With families and children in need currently having to travel to Toronto or Ottawa to receive care, the goal to build Sloane’s House is overseen by a Board of Directors and supported by numerous families, caregivers and community leaders. The centre, available for those living across Durham Region and in the surrounding underserved communities, will provide short-term specialized care for medically fragile children, offering engaging programming for the child, while parents and other caregivers take a much-needed break. Sloane’s House will also be supported by palliative care specialists so that children who are on their end-of-life journey will receive specialized care in an environment where quality of life will be the focus for however many days remain. This centre will be a welcoming “home away from home” where children and their families, feel cared for by our experienced professionals, based on the family’s shared values, beliefs, needs, hopes and goals for the present and the future.
